Hi there! So sorry for my absence... we have been super busy lately! Here is an update of whats been going on.

I am now self-employed. Yup. Scary. The good- I can make my own hours, adjust my own thermostat without coworkers yelling at me, I'm home when my kid comes home from school, freedom, freedom, freedom. The bad- being cash poor, having no one to pass the buck on to, no one to socialize with, being in my basement all the time, expensive or no health insurance, stress of not knowing when your next paycheck will come. It has been really hard but totally great.
Its a new adventure!

RAC Artisan Accessories now has sales reps in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Georgia, and Alabama. Tennessee, Mississippi, Florida, S. & N. Carolina to follow. Whew! Look out for our great products at a boutique near you!

Please know that Al passed away Tuesday evening. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 AM on Friday, November 26th at Allen & Redmond Funeral Home, 331 Elmira Street,Williamsport, PA 17701, with burial immediately following at Congregation Ohev Sholom Cemetery, Sand Hill Road, Montoursville, PA.

Please know that the family will be sitting shiva at the Sobel home on Saturday and Sunday, November 27th and 28th, from 6-9 P.M. with Rabbi Mandel saying prayers at 7:00 P.M.

As you know, Al worked throughout his career to improve access to justice. In the months before his death, he helped create the Central Susquehanna Valley Mediation Center, a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, so that members of the community might attempt to resolve child custody and other conflicts through mediation rather than litigation. In keeping with the Jewish tradition of no flowers and his wishes, any donation in Al’s memory can be made to Central Susquehanna Valley Mediation Center (CSVMC), P.O. Box 604, Lewisburg, PA, 17837. All such donations are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law.

Sooooo Sorry, I have been MIA for the past month. Its been a little crazy around here.

Tyler is doing great in school. He was a knight for Halloween complete with light up foam sword. That sword has already been hidden by his evil mother.

Business is booming. Good thing since I got laid off from most assistant work. Boooo.... I hooked up with two sales reps, one in Chicago, one in Ohio, to start selling my bags for me. So far so good... look for RebeccaBags in a shop near you soon!

Mornings like this are my favorite. They are thick with fog and promise.

Tyler's bus stop is right on the edge of the Bucknell University practice fields. Tyler gets on the bus and the bus drives away...

and its...

quiet.

The birds are chirping and the sprinklers are going and the bells from the church downtown are tolling. So, it isn't silent. But,its peaceful.

And I tell myself to enjoy it. I walk home, discovering spider webs and bunnies along the way. And then I walk through my door. And the day begins- dishes, breakfast, work, more work, sewing, emails, dinner, dishes, bedtime stories, time outs, headaches and hugs...

A new day will begin again tomorrow with new sounds and fog.

And I'm hopeful, there will be promise.

First Day of Second Grade

Second grade at a new school in a new state and he took the bus for the first time.

Turns out we were in the wrong spot to get the bus...

I didn't get a good shot of the bus, but here is my brave little man getting on the bus for the first time. He graciously posed for me. Open your eyeballs kid!

I will pick him up from the bus stop at 3:40 today. I hope he has a good day. I hope he gets on the right bus home! I think I'm more worried about it then he is!

Tyler got to try to catch his first tadpoles. "But they were fast and slippery, I put one under a bucket and it disappeared!"

Hospitals

I hate hospitals. People die in them. I have to remind myself that people are born in them too...

My Dad is sick, there is a blockage in his intestines that they can't seem to get out. He has a tube down his nose now to see if they can't suck the "crap" out.

Its hard to see him like that. Hes always been such a strong willed pain in the ass. Now hes helpless, laying in a hotel bed. I know he will be OK.

He has to be.

Tyler and I went to visit them last weekend in Baltimore at Johns Hopkins. I'm going to go back down there tomorrow. Give my mom a break, let her do laundry and gain some sanity. Shes been living in his hospital room with him. The first night he was admitted she slept on a shelf. I guess they couldn't give her a roll-away bed.

On a lighter note, Tyler is doing great. A little stir crazy and driving his mom nuts, but otherwise, fantastic. He built this Lego 747 to share with you all...

Hes going swimming in the river with my sister's family tomorrow. Hes never been to a river. It should be a learning experience. He can teach cousin Ethan to build a sand castle.

One Productive Space

What once was piles of boxes, metal shelving, plastic tables, and 100 trips up and down the basement stairs, is now one fantastic space. Its nice to be able to reorganize your stash. I forget about all the little bits of goodness that I have hidden away over the years.

So, I never got out of the basement but that's OK. This space, a corner of my basement, is pretty functional. I even have a little closet for all of my postage supplies and books about embroidery. The floors were an awful composite of concrete and ripped up linoleum. My great brother-in-law Michael schlepped the new rugs for me. Here is a little peak into my sanctuary..

Doggie decided to drop in for a visit. Can you find him?

Now the hard part is over and I can start creating. Whats on the "To Do" List?

Relocating - Day 2 & 3

Lewisburg welcomes you!

Such a cute town with charm and manners! Living in Chicago, I got used to dealing with an urban mentality, that living here is so refreshing! People are nice, respectful, say please and thank you. They honestly want to welcome you and help you out. People leave there doors unlocked, let their kids play outside unattended, loan you their grocery store discount card if you need it. I am even leaving metal shelving outside for the time being, an noone has tried to steal it yet!

We met a super nice lady named Arlene today at Tyler's swim lessons. She had never met me but my mom had mentioned to her that we were moving here and she had a stack of pamphlets of things for us to do. Kid friendly amusement parks, a glass museum, a community fair,a reptile zoo, even a spot for the kids to go swimming and catch minnows. Tyler has never seen a minnow, I'm afraid he might freak out. He isn't used to animals being animals, loud, smelly, even slimy. The only ones he has been exposed to are the seriously domesticated ones at the Lincoln Park Zoo, where the cows behave more like giant dogs.

Tyler is doing fantastic. He had his first swim lesson yesterday. He will have one everyday this week. There are 4 other boys in his class and he loves it. He will be a little fishy in no time. His goal is to swim well enough that he can go down the giant waterslide they have at the Milton community pool. He also made friends with the 3 children that live next door. They had a blast playing tag.

We are slowly but surely unpacking and getting settled. The bedrooms (which are huge, the 2 of them put together equal the entire size of our old apartment) are unpacked and comfy. The kitchen is unpacked, we have 18 more cabinets and 98" of counterspace more than the old apartment. Yes, I measured. The office is done and the living room is coming along nicely. I will eventually buy a couch and an entertainment armoire. I know, so adult!

The big challenge will be my studio. It would have found its home in the attic but there aren't any electrical outlets. So, it will live in the basement. There is a finished room, about 10'x 20' that will work nicely. Now, I just gotta lug all my junk down there and set it up.

Oy....

... Vey!

Today, the internet was hooked up. Only took them 1 day to come out! Suck on that Comcast! The garage man came too, he was Amish! I really liked how he said Illinois, pronouncing the S. No, David V. we are NOT dating. Tomorrow, the clean up man will come out and get rid of some of the stuff left behind by the last tenant.

We are on our way to making this house a home!

Oh, and the Subway sandwich shop here has a drive through! I have never seen that before, its amazing. Am I easily amused?

Thats it for now... I have to make my very picky child some dinner. The mission tonight is buttered noodles. Cross your fingers he eats it!

Relocating - Day 1

Whew! It was a looooong day....

My sister and brother in-law's plane was delayed so they didn't end up arriving in Chicago till 11:15 ( as opposed to 10pm the night before).

We picked up the brand new Penske truck, not a scratch on her and only 115 miles! We loaded the truck up pretty quickly. Darling Alisa brought us lunch. Shes awesome! Thank you Alisa!

At about 4:30pm Lee and Michael hit the road. I still had to clean and pack the car. Weary but excited, we set off on our new adventure around 5:30. About 4 hours behind schedule. It took FOREVER to get out of the city. I definately will not miss all the traffic Chicago has to offer.

We took a break for dinner and Tyler, being exceptionaly good in the car, got to pick dessert...

...the biggest waffle cone I have ever seen. He didn't even make a dent. About 1/4 of the way in he gave up.

We got to the hotel outside Toledo OH around 10:30. We slept like dead people.

Now Tyler is enjoying his waffles, watching cartoons, gearing up for the drive today.

About 6 hours of driving left today. We will stop a few times along the way.

We are excited to embark on a new chapter in our lives. Our house below, beckons...

Hello everybody!

I have been super busy lately so I thought I would give a rundown of Rebecca A. Cornish Handmade Bag's progress as of late...

*I currently have 127 items for sale in the shop! Hurray! Many more to come but I ran out of my sew-in tags... Keep your eyes peeled for new additions shortly.

*I have 6 beautiful pin-striped boxes painted by Michigan pin-stripe artist Clint Zadorsky. They will be transformed into 6 hard-rockin purses complete with padded satin lining. Those will be available in a few weeks, I will post photos of the finished pieces as they come available.

*I have gotten my stuff into 3 boutiques in the Chicagoland area. See my stuff at Hip Fit in Andersonville, Shebang in Bucktown and 2 Sisters in Park Ridge. One promised order, one promised re-order, and an out of state order in Lewisburg, PA on their way... with MANY meetings to show samples in the next couple of weeks. The holiday retail season officially kicks off November 27th and I want to be in as many boutiques as possible.

*I applied to the Detroit Urban Craft Fair this year. Its an awesome show featuring designers from the Detroit area. I'm not local so fingers crossed... I will find out if I made it in a week or so.

These designs were for a Bat Mitzvah in Evanston, IL.
The theme was candy, theme colors were pink and green.

Each adult table (there were 5) featured a different yummy treat. The place cards for each table were designed with corresponding candies.

The kid's tables (16 cocktail tables) featured glass mason jars with pink and green ribbon accents, pink and green balloons and filled with jelly beans.

Everyone had a "sweet" time!

Breaking News: The CPSIA Mandatory Testing & Certification Proposed 1 Year Suspension

We are so excited to announce that the Commission has voted for a "Stay of Enforcement of Certain Testing and Certification Requirements of CPSIA" — which means that they are proposing a 1 year suspension of the burden of lead testing and certification while they take more time to review the rules and plan enforcement! All of your hard work is paying off (for the time being at least!). You wouldn't have to pay to do the certification and testing, though you are still liable if your products are found to have lead. We are so pleased that artisans and vintage sellers got their voices heard. Your hard work is not over; we must continue to play a role in advocating for small business people throughout the coming year.

CPSC Grants One Year Stay of Testing and Certification Requirements for Certain Products

Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission voted unanimously (2-0) to issue a one year stay of enforcement for certain testing and certification requirements for manufacturers and importers of regulated products, including products intended for children 12 years old and younger. These requirements are part of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), which added certification and testing requirements for all products subject to CPSC standards or bans.

Significant to makers of children’s products, the vote by the Commission provides limited relief from the testing and certification requirements which go into effect on February 10, 2009 for new total lead content limits (600 ppm), phthalates limits for certain products (1000 ppm), and mandatory toy standards, among other things. Manufacturers and importers – large and small – of children’s products will not need to test or certify to these new requirements, but will need to meet the lead and phthalates limits, mandatory toy standards and other requirements.

The decision by the Commission gives the staff more time to finalize four proposed rules which could relieve certain materials and products from lead testing and to issue more guidance on when testing is required and how it is to be conducted.

The stay will remain in effect until February 10, 2010, at which time a Commission vote will be taken to terminate the stay.

The stay does not apply to:

Four requirements for third-party testing and certification of certain children’s products subject to:
- The ban on lead in paint and other surface coatings effective for products made after December 21, 2008;
- The standards for full-size and non full-size cribs and pacifiers effective for products made after January 20, 2009;
- The ban on small parts effective for products made after February 15, 2009; and
- The limits on lead content of metal components of children’s jewelry effective for products made after March 23, 2009.
Certification requirements applicable to ATV’s manufactured after April 13, 2009.
Pre-CPSIA testing and certification requirements, including for: automatic residential garage door openers, bike helmets, candles with metal core wicks, lawnmowers, lighters, mattresses, and swimming pool slides; and
Pool drain cover requirements of the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act.

The stay of enforcement provides some temporary, limited relief to the crafters, children’s garment manufacturers and toy makers who had been subject to the testing and certification required under the CPSIA. These businesses will not need to issue certificates based on testing of their products until additional decisions are issued by the Commission. However, all businesses, including, but not limited to, handmade toy and apparel makers, crafters and home-based small businesses, must still be sure that their products conform to all safety standards and similar requirements, including the lead and phthalates provisions of the CPSIA.

Handmade garment makers are cautioned to know whether the zippers, buttons and other fasteners they are using contain lead. Likewise, handmade toy manufacturers need to know whether their products, if using plastic or soft flexible vinyl, contain phthalates.

The stay of enforcement on testing and certification does not address thrift and second hand stores and small retailers because they are not required to test and certify products under the CPSIA. The products they sell, including those in inventory on February 10, 2009, must not contain more than 600 ppm lead in any accessible part. The Commission is aware that it is difficult to know whether a product meets the lead standard without testing and has issued guidance for these companies that can be found on our Web site.

The Commission trusts that State Attorneys General will respect the Commission's judgment that it is necessary to stay certain testing and certification requirements and will focus their own enforcement efforts on other provisions of the law, e.g. the sale of recalled products.

Say NO to the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008

On February 10th, 2009, the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 will go into effect. This particular piece of legislation requires that all clothing and other children's products being sold must be extensively tested for lead and other hazardous materials. Now as parents, we understand and appreciate this effort to keep our children safe; however, this law is too broad and applies to all children's products in existence. This means that all manufacturers and store owners will have to test their entire inventory even if the items were produced before February 10th, 2009. So, Halloween is over and now begins the steady stream of holiday madness...

I LOVE IT.

For those that don't know me, I would prefer it to be Christmas all year long. Like that sappy Walgreen's commercial where everything is perfect. Its crisp and snuggly weather. Everything sparkles and people are generally nicer to each other. The colors in the stores are bright and vibrant and warm... and with that, so am I!
